African Drumming

O africkém bubnováníIt has not been so long since playing the African djembe spread from the African continent nearly all over the world. History of the African djembe drum goes back more than a thousand years. Its origin is attributed to the Malinké ethnic group that used to live in a territory comprising today´s Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in West Africa. During 1950s-1960s many African ensembles went on tours and, thanks to that, the general public had an opportunity to meet and get closer to African culture. Nowadays, playing the djembe is very popular both with young and old. First of all, drumming is relaxing; and, on top, it is also creative and energizing.

Jiří Bouda’s Regular Classes

With the help of African djembe drums we will dive into the secrets of traditional West African rhythms, we will learn to feel the rhythm through our whole bodies and we will develop the basic improvisation techniques. We will learn to play the African djembe drum in particular but we will also try playing bass drums called kenkeni, sangban and dundun. The class is open to everyone regardless your age.

The classes are divided into two semesters – September to January and February to June. During each semester we will learn one or two traditional rhythms from Guinea or Mali together with an improvisation technique which can be spiced up by other non-African rhythms well-suited to develop the feeling of rhythm in your body.
